The Devil came out of his hole
Looking for a wayward soul
When he stopped up and looked me in the eye
Said, ”Boy, you know we gotta talk
So let’s just take a little walk
And find out where you’re going when you die!”
Now I’m not one to dodge a fight
But I trembled at this aweful sight
Then I took a breath and answered best I could
”Go to Hell you son of a Bee
You’ll see it freeze before you get me
’Cause I’m a man of God and that’s the truth!”
Well the Devil laughed and looked at me
Said, ”Son it’s years since you believed
How do you think your name got on my list?”
I thought a while ’bout what he said
And a prayer or two ran ‘round my head
But in the end, I just clenched my fist.
Fighting’s the only thing I had
Some would say I turned out bad
Though I always tried to do the best I could
But I’ve been drunk since my early teens
I guess that’s why I turned out men
And why my daddy said I’d be no good.
Right now I needed time to think
But even more, I needed a drink
So I asked the Devil if we could get some booze
He said, ”Boy, I thought you’d never ask”
And took two bottles from a paper bag
Said, ”This is one for me and one for you”
So we sat down and drank a while
And then I saw the Devil smile
He said, ”I’ve never been this drunk before”
I figured this must be my queue
And I knew exactly what to do
I punched the Devil and he fell to the floor!
The Devil opened one of his eyes
Said, ”Boy, you took me by suprise
But you won’t ever get that chance again.
’Cause next time you get drunk you see
I’ll take your soul back home with me
And you’ll wish you’d never caused me pain”
Well it’s twenty years ago today
The Devil said he’d make me pay
But in all these years he’s kept out of sight
‘Course I haven’t dared to drink a beer
Even quit smoking just last year
So in the end, I guess things turned out right!
